The earliest settlers were the Cape Ann colonists, led by Roger Conant, in Endicott's colony arrived September 6, On May10, , eight towns Salem, Lynn, Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, Gloucester, and Andover were set apart and incorporated as Essex County. It is built at the northerly end of the parish, and some of the grounds fall in the parish of Lidgate. It is a beautiful Tudor beamed, red-brick infil house - although it has been modernised over time by the Georgians and the Victorians.
