      Introduction In this paper I want to show how important agronomy is to understanding the agricultural history of England. I am not going to consider the history of the science of agronomy: that would be impossible in such a short paper, and in any case several surveys already exist (Russell, ; Fussell, ; Ambrosoli, ). Rather, I want to show how the science of agronomy can help us.
